Advice appreciated re trip
My passport expired in summer 2013 and I hadn't needed to get it renewed between then and now, wasn't planning any trips, so didn't bother. Was going to do it in the New Year 2015. Well that decision is biting me in the arse now.

It isn't definite, but possible that I may need to go to Eire, maybe with only a day's notice, at any time in the next few weeks.

I don't have a driving licence, either, or any other form of acceptable photo ID.

I have looked at the passport office website and it doesn't look good. They are talking about a 3 week wait for an appointment to do the premium one day service thingy.

The reason for my trip would be a genuine medical emergency, and I probably wouldn't have any problems getting a letter from a medic to confirm that.

Does anybody know if there are any loopholes or established proceedures to be able to fly without a passport in cases like these?

The 'emergency travel document' seems to be for Brit passport holders living abroad, unless I have read that incorrectly.

Thanks for any genuine replies.

Don't they have that charming harp emblem on their passports? Lovely - though I'd say I've never met an Irish person who was on an even psychological keel in my life. They are indeed very much like us Poles.

Irish passport will take months as you have to get all the birth and marriage certificates in order of your ancestors and once you have citizenship, then you can apply for a passport.

I have always used my driving Licence Photo ID when going across, never had a problem.

May have been asked already but, as one who has never been to Ireland and never ever will go to Ireland, is this trip ABSOLUTELY necessary?

Thanks stomper.

The ferry would be my absolutely last resort. I would try a giant catapult before embarking the diesel stinking ferry across the Irish sea in the middle of winter. Grim memories of doing that trip as a child.
